A Halloween Scene Straight Out of the 90s

It was a clear evening as I walked across the Flushing River Bridge into downtown. The scene was reminiscent of a 90s Halloween flick on VHS. The streets were clear, dance groups were performing to Thriller, and every business was eagerly passing out candy to excited children. The smell in the air was a delightfully crisp mix of autumn leaves and pumpkin spice.

The light was perfect for capturing some amazingly moody luminescent shots that only the cool shadows and warm lights of fall can provide. I shot the photos with only natural light—which is what this Michigan photographer prefers. Here are some of my favorites from that evening.

This first photo is my favorite of the bunch. It perfectly captures the feeling of standing on a bridge between two worlds—the past and the present, childhood and adulthood, reality and imagination. It's like looking through a portal into another time, one that's filled with magic and possibility.

This next photo has an ethereal quality to it. The lights dancing across the windows creates a sense of movement, even though the scene is actually quite still. It’s one of my favorite of the group as it really brings back those classic, small-town, vintage & analog feelings for me.

Lastly, this photo is special to me because it captures the spirit of Halloween so perfectly. The warm lights of Main Street contrast sharply with the cool shadows cast by the buildings, creating an atmosphere that is both inviting and slightly foreboding. It's like something straight out of a movie—which, I suppose, it is.

Halloween in downtown Flushing was a truly magical experience. If you closed your eyes, you could almost believe you were transported back in time to the 90s—when life was a bit more analog. Thanks for coming along on this little trip down memory lane with me! Until next time...
